Dr Jackson Rees (1912 – 2001), who for many years worked at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, was known internationally for his many innovations which have brought paediatric anaesthesia and intensive care to where it is today. He is probably best known by anaesthetists all over the world for his modification of the Ayre's ‘T’ piece, which revolutionised the ventilation of children anaesthetised and paralysed for surgery during the 1950’s and 60’s. During the same period he made major contributions to the development of paediatric anaesthesia for cardio-thoracic cases including bypass. He developed the UK’s first paediatric ICU in 1958 and was a founder member of the APA in1973. Subsequently he became president of the APA and then the first president of the World Federation of Paediatric Anaesthetic Societies. He was honoured around the world with honorary degrees and diplomas.
