Friday 20th November 2009 - Liverpool Medical Institution

‘The True Value of IPPV’

Dr Neil Soni, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London

Dr Soni will talk about the many consequences of positive pressure ventilation on lung physiology and the derangements encountered with their consequent cost particularly in patients who have been ventilated for significant periods in the setting of the intensive care unit.

Thursday 14th January 2010 - Liverpool Medical Institution

‘Revalidation - Last chance for Professionalism?’

Professor Chris Dodds, Middlesbrough

Professor Dodds will discuss the consequences of revalidation on the working lives of anaesthetists with the needs for relicensing and recertification. With the fine detail of this process still being refined, Professor Dodds will be able to consider the latest requirements for the anticipated start date in 2010.

Friday 26th February 2010 - Liverpool Medical Institution

The Trainee's Prize & Jackson Rees Medal

The format will be the same as last year with a closing date for all entries of Thursday 4th February. The complete abstract (including title, authors' names and addresses, text, table, space for figure, references and acknowledgements) should not exceed one A4 page. This format will allow 450-500 words, or 250-350 words plus a table or figure. The best 10 entries, as judged by a shortlisting committee (if necessary) will present at the Post-Fellowship meeting on the afternoon of Wednesday the 24th of February. Shortlisting of papers will pay particular attention to the originality of the idea, the amount of work that the presenting trainee had put into the paper, the clinical relevance of the paper, clarity of the presentation and slides, timekeeping and the response to questions. The best 4 presentations will then be shortlisted by all their peers at this meeting and will go on to present in the evening. This format continues from last year and involves all of the post-fellowship trainees in the decision making process for this competition. The best 4 presentations will then be shortlisted by all their peers at this meeting and will go on to present at the Friday evening meeting on the 26th February.

A compendium of recently discovered old films will be shown from the early years of the Liverpool Department of Anaesthesia in the 1940-1950s. It will give a glimpse of the local history of the specialty in the days when the ‘Liverpool Technique’ was being developed and promoted with the advent of muscle relaxants.

Thursday 15th January 2009 - Liverpool Medical Institution

‘Physiology at the Extreme – The Xtreme Everest Expedition’

Dr Mike Grocott, Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, University College London

Dr Mike Grocott was the Director and Expedition Leader of the Caudwell Xtreme Everest research project. This entailed placing a research team on the summit of Mount Everest in May 2007 and making the first ever measurement of PaO2 in human blood at 8400m, on the balcony of Everest. Dr Grocott will give a well-illustrated and insightful account of the expedition which was the centrepiece of an extensive and continuing programme of research into studying human systems stretched to breaking point in extreme environments.
